In 1885, travel writer Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore returned to Washington DC after visiting Japan. During her trip, she fell in love with the delicate flowering cherry trees and believed they would bring beauty to the newly reclaimed land along the Potomac River.

For more than two decades, she advocated for planting the trees in Washington DC but was repeatedly turned down by officials.

Everything changed in 1908 when Scidmore found an ally in Dr. David Fairchild, a botanist with the United States Department of Agriculture. Fairchild had successfully grown cherry trees at his home in nearby Maryland and supported the idea of planting them around the Tidal Basin.

Scidmore then wrote a letter to First Lady Helen Taft, who quickly embraced the idea.
