Can a townhome near George Mason University actually feel like a single family home? This one in the Kingsbury neighborhood of Fairfax comes surprisingly close. With unique architecture, tall windows, a two story family room, skylights, a huge private deck, and an oversized primary suite, this home feels completely different from the typical boxy townhouse layout. Trish and Andrew walk through the property in our newest Team DDA video and show why the layout is the real story here. The location gets your attention first.
But once you step inside, the architecture becomes the reason to keep watching.
A Townhome Right Near George Mason University
The Kingsbury neighborhood sits just down the road from George Mason University and close to Braddock Road.
Despite that convenient location, Trish and Andrew immediately notice how quiet the neighborhood feels.
The exterior architecture also stands out from many of the townhome communities around Fairfax.
It has a more detailed, traditional look that gives the neighborhood a surprisingly residential feel.
And according to Trish and Andrew, that feeling continues once you walk through the front door.
It Does Not Feel Like a Typical Townhouse
One of the biggest surprises is how open the main level feels.
Tall replacement windows bring in a huge amount of natural light, and the dining area offers much more space than Trish and Andrew expect from a townhouse.
Then you move toward the kitchen and family room.
That is where the layout really changes.
Instead of the long, narrow, boxy feeling found in many townhomes, the rooms open into one another with different ceiling heights and architectural details.
The kitchen adds plenty of counter and cabinet space, making the main level feel practical for entertaining as well as everyday living.
And Trish and Andrew immediately start planning where everyone would sit for Thanksgiving.
The Two Story Family Room Is the Showstopper
This might be the feature that separates the home most from a typical townhouse.
The family room has a two story ceiling.
There is also a dramatic floor to ceiling brick fireplace, skylights, a large semicircle window, and sliding doors leading outside.
The result is a room that feels bright, tall, and unusually spacious.
As Andrew points out in the video, many townhomes feel dark and enclosed.
This one does the opposite.
It is also apparently ready for a very tall Christmas tree.
๐ Ten feet, according to Trish and Andrew.
Then There Is the Deck
The outdoor space is another feature that deserves to be seen on video.
The deck is large enough for multiple outdoor living areas.
You could create:
๐ฝ๏ธ An outdoor dining area
๐ฅ A cozy seating space
๐ A grilling station
๐ฟ Plants and landscaping
๐ช Multiple entertaining areas
The back also feels surprisingly private.
Instead of looking directly into another townhouse, the property backs toward green space.
There is even a spiral staircase connecting the deck with the area below.
This is one of those spaces where photos may not fully communicate the scale.

The Natural Light Continues Upstairs
The skylights do not stop at the family room.
As Trish and Andrew head upstairs, they point out how much natural light continues through the upper level.
That makes the entire home feel more open.
And then they reach the primary suite.
The Primary Suite Is Huge for a Townhome
This is probably the second biggest surprise after the family room.
The primary bedroom is not simply one large room.
It has an additional sitting area with built in bookshelves that could be used in several ways.
๐ Reading room
๐ป Home office
๐๏ธ Sitting room
๐ถ Nursery
For a younger family, the nursery idea immediately catches their attention.
For someone downsizing from a detached home, the additional space could help make the transition to townhouse living feel much easier.
The main sleeping area also has large windows, vaulted ceilings, privacy toward the rear of the home, and substantial closet space.
It feels much more like a suite than a standard townhouse bedroom.
And the Primary Bathroom Is Not Small Either
The primary bathroom continues the theme.
There is plenty of natural light, a large shower, double vanity, linen storage, and closets on both sides.
Trish and Andrew spend a good portion of the tour testing exactly how much space there really is.
We will let you watch that part for yourself.
Why This Fairfax Townhome Is Worth Watching
The interesting thing about this property is not simply that it is close to George Mason University.
It is how different the floor plan feels from many other townhomes in Fairfax.
