1. Walk in a Winter Wonderland at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens

Location: Vienna, VA

There is something undeniably magical about the Winter Walk of Lights at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens. It has become a staple tradition for many families in Vienna and Fairfax, and for good reason. As you walk the half-mile animated trail, you are surrounded by over a half-million LED lights portraying flowers, animals, and festive scenes.

Why We Love It: Unlike drive-through displays, this is an immersive experience. You are out in the fresh air, walking through the gardens which take on a completely different personality at night. It is perfect for a romantic date night or a chaotic, fun-filled family outing.

2025 Need-to-Know:

The lights are on nightly from November 7, 2025, through January 4, 2026.

• Pro-Tip: If you are planning to visit between December 5 and December 31, you must purchase your tickets online in advance. This is the peak season, and on-site tickets won't be sold.
• Don’t Miss: The S’mores station at the end of the trail. There is nothing quite like roasting a marshmallow over an open fire with a cup of hot cocoa in hand after a chilly walk.

2. Step Back in Time in Old Town Alexandria

Location: Alexandria, VA

If you want your holidays served with a side of history, Old Town Alexandria is the place to be. The first weekend of December is arguably the most exciting time to visit, as the city celebrates its heritage with the 54th Annual Alexandria Scottish Christmas Walk Parade.

The Event:

Taking place on Saturday, December 6, 2025, this parade is a spectacle of Scottish clans wearing their tartans, pipe and drum bands filling the streets with music, and—a crowd favorite—plenty of Scottie dogs marching proudly. It is a nod to the Scottish merchants who founded Alexandria in 1749.

The Boat Parade:

Later that same evening (December 6), the waterfront lights up for the Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights. Dozens of powerboats and sailboats, decked out in elaborate light displays, cruise the Potomac River. It is a unique dazzling display that reflects beautifully off the water.

Local Insight:

Arrive early. Parking in Old Town can be tricky on parade days. We recommend parking at a Metro station (like King St-Old Town) and walking or taking the free King Street Trolley.

3. Experience George Washington’s Christmas at Mount Vernon

Location: Mount Vernon, VA

Just down the George Washington Memorial Parkway, the home of our first president offers a festive glimpse into the 18th century. Christmas at Mount Vernon is a dignified, educational, and visually stunning way to celebrate.

• Christmas Illuminations (Dec 20-21, 2025): This is the main event. The mansion is lit in soft ambient colors, and the evening ends with a spectacular fireworks display over the Potomac River.

4. A Drive-Through Spectacle: Bull Run Festival of Lights

Location: Centreville, VA

Sometimes, it is just too cold to walk, or the kids are already in their pajamas. That is when the Bull Run Festival of Lights is the perfect option. Located in Bull Run Regional Park, this is a 2.5-mile drive-through light show that you enjoy from the comfort of your heated car.

The Experience:

You turn off your headlights and follow the glowing path of 40,000+ animated lights set to music. It is a low-stress way to get into the holiday spirit.

• Dates: Open nightly from November 14, 2025, to January 4, 2026.
• The Holiday Village: Don’t just drive home after the lights! Pull into the Holiday Village afterwards to ride the carnival rides, get a photo with Santa, or warm up around the bonfires.

5. Small Town Charm: Occoquan HolidayFest

Location: Occoquan, VA

The historic town of Occoquan feels like the set of a Hallmark movie, especially during the holidays. The town goes all out with its HolidayFest, spanning several weekends in late November and December.

Highlights for 2025:

• Tree Lighting: Occurs on November 22, 2025.
• Holiday Artisan Market: Taking place December 6-7, 2025, this is the perfect spot to shop small. Instead of fighting the crowds at Tysons Corner, you can walk the riverfront streets and buy unique, handmade gifts from local artisans.
• Letters to Santa: There is a special North Pole mailbox at Town Hall where kids can drop off their letters—and if you include a return address, Santa writes back!

6. Skate the Day Away at Reston Town Center

For a more active holiday outing, head to the Reston Town Center Ice Skating Pavilion. The Pavilion is iconic in Northern Virginia, covered by a soaring glass roof that allows you to skate rain or shine (or snow!).
